Mount Vesuvius National Park surrounds the active volcano you can see from the Sorrento coast. From the top, the view stretches from Naples across the Bay to the Sorrento peninsula, and to Capri on clear days.
You drive up to the Quota 1000 parking lot, then walk 30 minutes on a marked trail. From Sorrento it's about an hour and a quarter by car; organised tours with dedicated buses also run from town.
Best time to go: April-June and September-October. Summer is hot and crowded; in winter the trail is often closed for weather. Book the crater ticket online before you leave.
